COAT LOSS IN POMERANIANS
ALOPECIA X - BLACK SKIN DISEASE - BSD

I have dedicated over 25 years to studying coat loss in Pomeranians, identifying various causes that predominantly affect males but also impact females.

I am developing a dedicated page to thoroughly address the increasingly significant issue of coat loss, which is often misdiagnosed as BSD or Alopecia X.

It's crucial to understand that in 80% of cases, a treatable underlying cause exists.

While Alopecia X, or black skin disease, is quite rare, 80% of BSD cases have identifiable diagnoses and effective treatments for regrowth.

The primary causes of coat in this breed are post-clipping alopecia, stemming from the troubling trend of shaving or excessively shortening their coats.

Many veterin do not conduct thorough testing to determine the root cause, making it for pet owners to test for additional allergy testing.

Hypothyroidism significantly contributes to coat loss and is often confused with alopecia X.

If a thyroid issue is identified, it should be recognized as the cause of coat loss, confirming that the dog does not Alopecia X.

Currently, there is no definitive treatment or test to diagnose Alopecia X, BSD, or black skin disease but much reasearch is still being done.
